Update from our Spiritual Leader

Rev. Dr. Kenn GordonBy Rev. Dr. Kenn Gordon

Greetings from Ukraine! My wife, Dr. Deborah, and I have had a delightful, eye-opening, experience attending the 6th Annual Ukraine Science of Mind Conference from September 13 - 19. We enjoyed the magnificent hospitality of anOM study group in Kiev, which consists of about 20 wonderful, well-trained, students. We also spent an evening with a group enjoying a traditional Ukrainian welcome with dinner, dancing, and vodka at a restaurant and farm in a small village just north of Cherkasy. One of our highlights included teaching Thomas Troward to a Cherkasy group of eight students, a beautiful cross-cultural experience as they spoke Russian and we spoke English.

Dr. Kenn and Students

From 14-hour train rides to visiting a Temenos class on the Edinburgh Lectures given in Russian, Dr. Deborah and I had an amazing time in Ukraine. Thank you, Rev. Barbara Leger, for such a beautiful experience. To learn more about the great work that is being done in Ukraine, visit www.scienceofmind.org.ua/eng/

Blessings,
Dr. Kenn Gordon

Update from our President

Rev. Dr. John B. WaterhouseBy Rev. Dr. John B. Waterhouse

As we prepare for our Spiritual Living Convention in February, an early piece of business is for all Community Members, including Teaching Chapters and Focus Ministries, to complete their 2013 Annual Report.  In the next couple of days, an email message will be sent to all community leaders with the information necessary to complete this task.

There are three reasons why we do this: First, because we all agreed to do it as part of our affiliation with Centers for Spiritual Living.  Second, because this information about our ministries and preferences helps the organization provide us all with better programs and services. And third, because completion of our Annual Report is the method by which the number of representative delegates are determined for voting during our Convention in February.  Without completion of this report, a Member Community cannot have delegate voting rights.

Also different from last year, this year’s Annual Report includes our 2014 Committed Giving information, which is essential to our annual budgeting process and helps the organization in its stewardship of the money that we all contribute.  In our first year of operations, the committed giving process was done by mail. This will be a seamless method of providing our financial intentions within a confidential report.

In the next day or so, community leaders will receive an email from Home Office, which will contain  two important links.

  1. A downloadable copy of the survey in PDF format, which you are encouraged to print out and review. You may want to go  ahead and fill in all the answers before you actually do the survey online as some answers may require a bit of research on your part.

A step-by-step visual instruction guide (also in PDF format) that will direct you through the process of updating your Organization Profile and accessing the Annual Survey process.  Follow these instructions and you’re not likely to have any difficulties in completing the survey.

A mailbox has been set up for you to contact staff with a request for assistance, the address is elections@csl.org

The report itself will not take more than a few minutes to complete if you have gone through the report in advance and collected all the pertinent information.  Fortunately, if you begin the survey online and find you still need to collect more information, you can exit the survey and return to complete it later by following instructions on the first page of the Annual Survey.

Thank you for completing your reports as soon as possible.

So many blessings!
Dr. John

Member Support & Education Update

Rev. Gregory TooleBy Rev. Gregory Toole, Director

Education Q&A

Q: Who do I contact with education questions now that Dr. Lynn Connolly has retired?
A:
You may contact me (gtoole@csl.org) for policy questions, and Dianna Ferguson (dferguson@csl.org) for questions on accessing the curriculum or registering courses with us. Starting in November, we will also have an email address for Rev. Bob Deen who will be responsible for ministerial education. In the meantime, you may contact Maureen Thurston, RScP, regarding ministerial education (mthurston@gmail.com).

Q: When will the Practitioner Year 2 curriculum be available?
A: It is on the internal csl.org website now (available with the minister's password only). As it is new, we request your support in identifying any areas that need correcting or modification. You may email me at (gtoole@csl.org) with questions, comments, and edits.

Q: What are the requirements for entering practitioner training?
A:
In the Education Catalog (on the internal website), page 18, you will find a chart of the requirements that go into effect for students entering practitioner training in the fall of 2015. Recently we made a change that is not yet reflected in the catalog, which combines the Consciousness Studies A and B, thereby reducing the requirements to six courses. For students entering practitioner training prior to 2015, you may continue to follow the path you were using in either the former ICSL or UCSL, or you may make the change now to the 2015 requirements.

Q: How does one enter ministerial training?
A:
The ministerial training program for Centers for Spiritual Living combines aspects of each of the former organizations. Students can either enter a Holmes Institute regional center, of which there are three: Santa Rosa, San Diego (also has a satellite in the Pacific Northwest), and Denver (also has a satellite in Florida), or they can study the first year of regional courses with one of our teaching ministers at a local center, and then take years two and three at a regional center. Our current teaching ministers are Dr. David Ault, Dr. Maureen Hoyt, Rev. James Mellon, and Rev. Frankie Timmers.

Applicants to ministerial training must first be licensed practitioners. Applicants do NOT need to have a bachelor’s degree to enter ministerial training. Those students who do have a bachelor’s degree will be eligible to earn a master’s degree through their ministerial training.

We are also currently conducting final review and approval for proposals submitted for a regional center in Los Angeles.

Q: How can ministers teach in the ministerial training program?
A:
The easiest way to teach in the ministerial training program is to contact one of our regional deans and let them know what areas you are interested in teaching. The current deans are Rev. Katherine Economou, San Diego (kaeconomou@gmail.com); Dr. Kim Kaiser, Santa Rosa (kaeconomou@gmail.com); and Rev. Ras Smith, Denver (kaeconomou@gmail.com). The second way is to become a teaching minister that teaches the first year (six courses) of the regional program. The teaching minister program is in a pilot stage for the first three years of the new organization, only open to teachers who have taught the former ICSL 400 series. You may contact me if you are interested in being a teaching minister.

You may find many more details on the current design of our education programs in the Policies and Procedures Manual, section 10 (found on the internal website under Business and Administration).

The Education Committee will meet face-to-face on October 30-31 to synthesize the various ideas that are emerging from the field, the Growth and Development Commission, the Leadership Council, and its own visioning and planning efforts. We encourage you to email us with ideas you’d like us to consider for the future of our education programs. You may email Dr. Karen Kushner, Education Committee Chair at :revkarenk@aol.com or me at gtoole@csl.org.

Operations Update

Practitioners: Protect Yourself and Your Clients with Liability Insurance
Did you know that if are seeing a client in your home that YOU are liable if the client is injured? Something as simple as tripping over a step or falling over a piece of furniture can potentially end up costing you thousands of dollars. And, because the client is seeing you on business, your home owner’s insurance will often not protect you from paying for your client’s hospital bills or ongoing medical expenses.

Now there is a simple, inexpensive way to protect yourself – Practitioner Liability Insurance (Life Coach Policy) offered by Centers for Spiritual Living Insurance Department. For a low, yearly payment of only $249, you, your home, the center that holds your license, and Home Office will have up to $1 million in coverage!

When you insure your practitioner practice through Centers for Spiritual Living, you are benefiting yourself and our organization. We have partnered with WAVE Financial Partners, an insurance brokerage firm that has access to 38 major carriers, to make sure you are receiving the best rate available for your insurance coverage. And, when you buy your insurance through Centers for Spiritual Living, you are helping fund services and programs to our member communities. Liability insurance for your practice is a smart idea; buying it from Centers for Spiritual Living is even smarter! To find out more, click here.

Thank you for your continued support.

Blessings,
Steve

Communications Update

Dr. Judy Morley, RScPBy Rev. Dr. Judy Morley, Director

We have just signed up for a new service called MiFlyer - a text-based electronic flyer that allows us to communicate events and happenings to anyone who texts 70000 to Spiritual. This is a great new way to provide information quickly and easily. We will have more information available soon.

If you haven’t yet downloaded the Spiritual Living Resource App, you can now do so at either the Apple App Store or Google Play. We are working to populate the app with like-minded businesses in every market. To do that, we are investigating sponsorships for conferences that service the vital Cultural Creative and LOHAS markets. If you know anyone who would be interested in having their business listed on the app, please urge them to sign up at app.csl.org

Centers for Spiritual Living recently participated in the Conscious Life Jam, a three-day social media event to benefit Spiritual Living Radio Network. We participated along with some of the biggest names in our movement, and featured our Orlando Convention, our publications, and the new insurance program being offered by Centers for Spiritual Living. Thanks to Horton Interactive Media and Spiritual Living Radio Network for providing such an interactive and informative forum!

Have you checked out our Principles of Spiritual Living blog recently? Always thought-provoking, recent topics include parenting with the power of I Am and the amazing power of choice. Find it here: www.patheos.com/blogs/theprinciplesofspiritualliving.

How does Home Office communicate with you? The primary way that Home Office communicates to the field is through Net Community. This method takes email addresses from our database and sends information directly to your inbox. This is one-way communication, and you can identify these emails because the sender is identified as “Home Office.” For ministers and practitioners, this is the ONLY way we communicate important information, such as licensing renewal requirements, policy changes, and organizational updates. Although there is an “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the page, if you unsubscribe from this email, you will be completely removed from all communications from Home Office.

For ministers and practitioners, there is a second communication format, and that is the Google Group. This is a chat-format, and consequently is interactive. The Google Group is completely optional, and anyone of the appropriate standing (i.e. minister or practitioner) may join or unsubscribe from his/her particular Google Group at any time.

We are looking for new members to join our IT Committee, specifically people with background in database management, systems integration, and enterprise resource platforms.  If you’re interested in serving in this way and have expertise in these areas, please contact me at jmorley@csl.org.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Love & blessings,
Judy

Leadership Council Update

By Dr. Heather Dawn Clark, Chair

Heather Dawn Clark, Chair Leadership CouncilThis past summer the Leadership Council created a personnel committee whose job it became to look closely at how we are doing what we are doing, measure it against the Organizational Design Model (ODM), and then make adjustments. We started with our president, Dr. John Waterhouse, and spiritual leader, Dr. Kenn Gordon. Tracy Brown, RScP, combed through the ODM and wrote questions to measure how effectively each one was doing at his job. In addition to the Leadership Council, six senior ministers were asked to participate in the evaluation. Three were chosen by the Leadership Council and three were chosen by the person being evaluated. Then we compiled the data and I provided feedback to our two leaders.  We then shared a summary with the Leadership Council. I believe a self-evaluation of the entire Leadership Council will be done in our face-to-face meeting in October. It was a very interesting process for us and for me personally. I have never been evaluated as a minister or in my former life as a teacher. Can we measure consciousness?

Ministers Council Update

By Dr. Barbara R. Waterhouse, Chair

Barabara R. Waterhouse Chair Ministers Council. The Minister Council is completing plans for our first Centers for Spiritual Living Ministers’ Gathering.  To date, we have 158 registered attendees.

Hosting a gathering for our ministers and their partners/spouses in 2013 was one of the council’s first commitments after being elected this past February. Our intention was to make this first gathering easy to attend for as many ministers as possible. To accomplish this, we waived any registration fee and sent out a Survey Monkey with three different geographical locations and three time choices. Napa and early October came in first. We are covering the event’s expenses with funds both from a portion of this year’s ministerial licensing fees and money contributed by the Centers for Spiritual Living Clergy Association. Not knowing how many ministers would attend and understanding the previous losses CSL has incurred from recent unfulfilled hotel commitments, we chose to not sign a contract for hotel rooms and meeting space. Instead, we were able to reserve blocks of rooms, 10 at a time, at the Hawthorne Suites in Napa. That gave us rooms, but not a place to meet.

With much treatment, we went forward with the event, knowing there is a solution to every situation. After sharing my concerns that we might be gathering under a tree in a park somewhere, my husband John said, “What about the Napa Valley Center for Spiritual Living?” I brought it up with the council and Rev. Karyl Huntley contacted Rev. Janet Garvey-Stanvick, our colleague in Napa. Rev. Janet’s reply was that she and her community would be honored to host the gathering of our ministers.

Rev. Janet and the members of the Napa Center have been very generous. They have provided us with a beautiful facility in which to meet, are organizing a reception, wine tasting, bus transportation for a vineyard tour, and more.  They are shopping, cooking, serving, and cleaning up.

I am so moved to once again be reminded of the strength we have in our communities and our members. People we have never met are going out of their way to be in service to the greater good of our movement by supporting our ministers. We are so much more than an organization. We are people touching people as we live the Science of Mind.

Practitioner Council Update

By Linda Watson, Practitioner Emeritus, Chair

Linda Watson, Practitioner Emeritus, Chair

I’m feeling the changing rhythms of life as the seasonal wheel turns from summer to autumn; back-to-school activities, classes, and planning for the last quarter of the year. The Practitioner Council has been immersed in planning and preparing our mediums for connection and communication with all practitioners. Our quarterly newsletter, PracTical Wisdom, was published and circulated in the second week of September. It’s filled with great articles from some of our newly licensed practitioners, memorable moments from Asilomar, and great photos. Thanks to all who contributed in creating a wonderful fall issue.

Be sure to tune in to our quarterly conference calls, facilitated by our Practitioner Representatives. They were held Sept. 21, 23 and 28 this quarter. They’re filled with information, inspiration, and lively conversation. If you aren’t able to call in, the calls will be recorded and archived for future listening.

We were thrilled to hear from Annie Glasgow, the Practitioner Services Coordinator, that there are about 200 newly licensed practitioners. We congratulate those who completed the journey and extend a warm welcome into the 2,500 member circle of licensed Centers for Spiritual Living practitioners.

We’re also beginning to plan and vision for the Spiritual Living Convention, Feb. 16 - 21, 2014, in Orlando. It’s time to gather your friends together at your center and join us in Orlando for a week filled with inspiration, fun, and adventure. As a member of the planning committee, I can assure you it’s going to be a W.O.W. experience you won’t want to miss.

Continuing to hold the highest for Centers for Spiritual Living, each ministry, our ministers, practitioners, and laity. We are blessed to be walking this extraordinary path together! If you would like to be in contact, you can reach me at lindajoy99@aol.com or by calling (714) 585-5070.

Laity Council Update

By Layne Taylor, Chair

Layne Taylor, Chair Laity Council. The Laity Council will use the remainder of 2013 to focus on continuing to expand the regional networks, communicating our goals across the centers, and preparing for an exciting organization meeting in Orlando.

Members of the council are currently assigned to represent the laity on each of the regional leadership teams. Our goal is to ultimately have a representative from each center and to work together with the regional support coordinators to name a designated lay leader for each region.

We are also asking each minister to identify a lay leader within their center to serve as a point of communication contact for regional announcements and events.

Current regional assignments are:

Sandra Wood - Reg. 1 (So. CA) and Reg. 7 (CO, TX)

Layne Taylor - Reg. 2 (Los Angeles area) and Reg. 3 (Central CA)

Crystal Davis - Reg. 4 (No. CA) and Reg. 8 (Midwest)

Susan Hopkins - Reg. 5 (NW US and Canada) and Reg. 6 (US Mt. States)

Pam Lambert – Reg. 9 (SE US) and Reg. 10 (Eastern US)

Mari Avicolli - Reg. 11 (NE US) and non-US regions 12 and 13

We will be visiting as many centers in our regions as possible and have created a brief presentation for groups and congregations. We look forward to sharing our vision of a connected and empowered lay community and how they can support the operation and growth of their centers in a greater way.

We continue to feature the stories of volunteer recognition on our Facebook page and will be spotlighting the activities of our centers in support of the World Day of Service. We will also continue to post updates on center visits, and regional meetings and events.

If you know a lay leader in your community who may be interested in participating as a center or regional representative, please contact me at ltaylor@cslsimi.org or the council member in the appropriate region.

In Light, Love, and Joyful Service,
Layne Taylor
Chairperson – Laity Council
